wednesdays are for cocktails…

1

Today is the first day of fall.  And so to celebrate (as I always do when I’m celebrating) I made cocktails.

I found this pink elderflower rose sparkling lemonade on my last grocery store venture, and since, I can describe it as nothing short of life changing.

I mean, it’s great alone but, as I’ve found with many (all) other things, it’s better with vodka.

3

I added a little ice, Ketel One, lime and springs of lavender.   I used to order Stoli but one night when I ordered it, a friend of mine made the comment, “how can you drink that?”.

So now I order Ketel One, which I don’t know if you know this but it tastes like Stoli.  And since I care little for getting reprimanded (ask my mom), I order differently now.

Ketel One it is!

6

On another note, I’m currently trying my hand at growing lavender; ask me in three months how that went.

Actually you can ask me now.  It’s dying.  But just another reason to make cocktails!

chi-chi-chi-chia…

After consuming copious amounts of…everything this weekend (I recall some pizza, thai and at least a vineyard of wine), I decided it was time to start my week off healthier.

1

Back when I did Whole30 (don’t do it, you can’t drink wine; whatever that’s about), I used to eat chia and fruit every morning.

Actually it might have been for my second breakfast because my first one usually left me starving.

2

Mix chia, milk of your choice, sweetener and vanilla extract.

4

It’s no choco-chip pancakes with a side of mimosas (no orange juice please) but does pack a powerful anti-oxidant punch.

And is surprisingly decent good.

wine wednesday…

My friend in LA sent me this from Refinery29.  ‘What Your Signature Drink Says About You.”

I probably couldn’t have described myself better.  And wine happens to be my drink of choice.

As they said, “easiest to refill…”

wine

Personality Type: You feel generally happy and dissatisfied at the same time. You are ambitious but don’t feel lucky. You would call yourself jealous because you are also very self-aware. Your preferred party position is talking late into the night.

Signature Drink: Wine. It’s the drink that’s easiest to refill.

what drink are you? : Refinery29

sundays…

mardi grasMy Sunday took a turn for the lazier when I decided to bring The Boyfriend with me to the grocery store.  This is when I find things like $20 bison jerky or a family sized box of Fruity Pebbles in my cart.  He discreetly puts them in, I less discreetly toss them out.

But here we are, 9am on Sunday, with King Cake and Mardi Gras beer (which tastes like cheap beads mixed in with poor choices).

travel…staycation

Sometimes it’s nice to stay home and take your vacation there.  And it’s even nicer when you get to stay and call the Monteleone your home for the weekend.

My mom came in for a short visit; she might have stayed back in Texas had she known all the non-stop fun we were going to have.

monteleone

As soon as she landed, I took her to see the house we just finished remodeling.  She “oohhhed” and “aahhed” and that was the only productive thing we did all weekend.  After that we checked in and the weekend became a blur of cocktails and restaurants.

{Monteleone lobby}

We twirled around the Carousel Bar, had Gin Fizzes at the Sazerac (I actually had two because my mom did not care for hers), oysters at Cafe Amelie and Pimms at The Columns.

french quarter

We wandered the French Quarter, stopped in Lafitte’s (the oldest bar in America, not to mention where someone is now the proud new owner of my credit card), went to the open air French Market along with more general touristy shenanigans.

And in the end as much as I hated to see her go, my liver needed a much deserved break and I was ready to get out of the French Quarter.

A little bit of that place goes a looong way.

lean & green (side of chocolate)…

It seems green juice is universal.

Normally I start my day with green juice.  But that’s Louisiana and this is Hawaii.  So I’ll normally start my day with a mimosa (“no orange juice please”) and if I ‘accidentally’ had a glass (or two) too much of wine the night before (a common mistake around here), a chocochip waffle.

“Do you want that gluten-free?”

“It’s a chocolate chip waffle.  Honestly, at this point just leave the gluten in there.”

Green juice and gluten free chocochip waffles.  What is the world coming to.

Where is my mimosa (no orange juice please)?

a morning boost…

morning boost 2

I’m over juicing.

It’s labor intensive and takes me an eternity to make one drink.  And in the end, the drink ends up costing me $26 in produce, not to mention ginger and bizarre additions like turmeric or parsley.

morning boost ingredients

Where does one go post-juicing fade?  I’m not quite sure, but I own a costly blender and decided to put it to use.

So this is what I’ve been calling my ‘morning boost’.  I need one.  I’m laaazy.

I use a handful of each ~blueberries, raspberries and kale~ add cocowater and lemon.  Sprinkle with chia seeds and voila.

morning boost

And since moving my Saturdays have become less my own, I’m off to Home Depot to take a class on “How to Tile.”  Hopefully this will help me pay attention because tiles don’t seem to hold my attention quite like an issue of Vogue does…

happy fourth…

chia breakfast

In the spirit of trying to be healthy, I’ve taken to eating chia and fresh fruit for breakfast.  And in the spirit of the fourth, I color coordinated my breakfast.

This time last year I think I already had a cocktail in my hand out on a boat somewhere, so this seems like a step in the right (less fun) direction.

Happy Fourth!

nomnom…Collard Green Wraps

DSC_0010After a week of vacation (no more rum punch ever please) followed by a week of birthday girl celebrations, I need a smidge of a healthy restart.

My body will thank me, actually it’s begging me desperately for it.

DSC_0013

So after spending a morning of juicing cucumbers, ginger and lemons to make a detox water (actually juicing only took two minutes, whereas the rest of the morning was spent cleaning my juicer), I started in on lunch.

DSC_0018

On Pinterest (honestly where else?) I have been seeing people sub-out carbs for various veggies for clean eating.  Use sweet potatoes instead on buns for sliders (tried that one), bell peppers instead of chips for nachos (no thanks, nachos are literally perfect as is) and collard greens as to make wraps.

So I made some lemon-oregano chicken for The Boyfriend, added some hummus from the greek place around the corner and various chopped veggies.

Perfect way to kick-start a healthy week.  But then I realized it’s already Thursday and I’m meeting a friend for cocktails tonight.  Well, you gotta start somewhere.
